Day 1 Madrid
Welcome to the captivating country of Spain! Your journey begins in the beautiful city of Madrid, a place overflowing with splendid boulevards, delightful parks and delicious cuisine. Upon arrival at the airport, you will be collected and transferred to your hotel where you will meet your leader and small tour group for an introductory meeting this evening. Those who arrive early may wish to visit the Museo del Prado before checking out modern Spanish works such as Picasso’s or Dali’s art pieces on show at the Museo Reina Sofia. Finally, take a glimpse into eight centuries worth of European painting by visiting the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza. In the evening gather with your leader and fellow travellers over dinner at a lovely restaurant featuring Madrid’s renowned tapas dishes.

Day 2 Madrid
Head to the culturally-rich city of Toledo this morning. Perched atop a high craggy rock beside the Tagus River, the city boasts an impressive array of architectural monuments from almost all time periods, ranging from Gothic to Baroque. Today gives you an opportunity to learn about one particular aspect ofToledo’s culture: marzipan! Considered by some as having been invented in Toledo itself, this almond meal based confection has been produced here for centuries and is widely regarded as some of the best in the world. Find out how it’s made and explore its significance within Toledo before tasting some for yourself! With a free afternoon ahead, meander over to Madrid and visit tourist attractions such as the Royal Palace or spend some time relaxing in Parque del Retiro.

Day 3 Seville
In and around Seville
Why not take the train from Madrid to Seville, one of Spain’s most historic cities. Day 4 Seville
Begin your day in Seville by arranging a tour with a knowledgeable local guide. Day 6 Granada
On your journey from Cordoba to Granada, take an opportunity to visit an oil mill. Here, you’ll be able to explore the process of olive oil production with the passionate and knowledgeable owner of the family-run business. You’ll also have a chance to sample some of the product – as well as olives, olive marmalade, olive pate and wine! When you arrive in Granada, make check-in at your hotel before going out this evening for drinks and dinner around the city with your companions.

Day 7 Granada
Today is the day to explore Granada! Come with your leader on an orientation journey to get familiarized with the city, delving into its history and admiring Islamic architecture and Arab influences. After that, take some time for independent exploration – why not head to a local tea room and try some Moorish delicacies? In the afternoon, join a knowledgeable guide in a tour of Alhambra. Founded in the 11th century, Alhambra boasts Muslim art at its finest. Day 8 Valencia

Stroll around the oldest palm grove in Europe, which was established by Phoenicians and developed by Arabs in eighth and ninth centuries; Your tour guide will provide a comprehensive explanation about its past. Then it’s off to Spain’s third largest city – Valencia as it is home to an incredible mix of both Roman, Muslim and Christian architecture over two thousand years ago. Day 9 Valencia
Discover Albufera Lake, a unique ecological site situated south of Valencia. After the briefing, wander over to one of the city’s remarkable restaurants for dinner together as a group; it is here where your leader will introduce you all to traditional Portuguese cuisine alongside exciting regional flavours!

Day 12 Lisbon
Lisbon is a European city renowned for its stunningly renovated buildings, grand boulevards and exquisite castles and churches. The best way to experience the city is with a knowledgeable local guide on a walking tour. Begin your adventure by hopping aboard an iconic yellow Gloria cable car – it’s a sight not to be missed! Then explore the vibrant district of Bairro Alto, the bustling Chiado area and Alfama’s winding cobblestone streets filled with eateries tucked away in the traditional homes. Last, but certainly not least, sample a pastel de nata at one of the local establishments – Portugal’s most famed pastry that makes for delightful sweet treat!Embark on a journey of discovery and explore one of Lisbon’s most captivating monuments, Lisbon Cathedral. Built in 1150 by the city’s first bishop, Gilbert of Hastings, it has become an enduring symbol of the region. Day 13 Cascais / Cabo da Roca / Sintra / Coimbra

Listen as your leader explains how cooler temperatures have made this place popular among royalty, poets, writers and tourists alike – including Lord Byron! Explore the alluring Pena Palace before continuing on to Cabo da Roca (roughly 1 hour away), where its rocky cape marks mainland Portugal’s westernmost point. Then pay a visit to Cascais, formerly a small fishing village but eventually developed into an exclusive royal residence in the 19th century. On your arrival, you will be invited on a tour of one of the area’s premier wineries – where you will learn more about the origins of Port wine and how it has shaped Portuguese history over time. During your exploration, taste a variety of locally produced blends to determine which appeals most to your pallet. And after an informative day out, take a moment to savor a light picnic lunch consisting of rustic local specialties paired with even more delectable wines! Why not jump aboard the train for a day trip to Matosinhos, a beautiful seaside city? To get to know more about Porto’s rich culture, you can even explore around the World Heritage listed Ribeira district. Before returning home, make sure to have dinner at a high-rated local restaurant.

Today, you have the freedom to leave at any moment. Though, should you wish to prolong your stay in Porto, we will happily arrange extra accommodation for you (as long as it is available).

In these cases, we will use a similar standard of accommodation.

Throughout the trip, we request that our properties prepare rooms in time for our arrival, especially if we’re arriving prior to normal check-in time. However, this isn’t always possible which means we won’t be able to check-in immediately on arrival at some hotels. Instead, we can store our luggage and explore our new destination or on some trips, have use of shared day rooms until all rooms are available.

OCCASIONAL ALTERNATIVE ACCOMMODATION:

The style of accommodation indicated in the day-to-day itinerary is a guideline. On rare occasions, alternative arrangements may need to be made due to the lack of availability of rooms in our usual accommodation. A similar standard of accommodation will be used in these instances.

TWIN SHARE BASIS:

Accommodation on this trip is on a twin/multishare basis. We pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. Please note there may be times where facilities will be shared rather than ensuite and rare occasions when you share a room with passengers travelling on different Intrepid trips than your own.

CHECK-IN TIME:

Guide
All group trips are accompanied by one of our group leaders. The aim of the group leader is to take the hassle out of your travels and to help you have the best trip possible. Premium leaders are Intrepid’s most experienced, with in-depth knowledge and extensive local networks to make it a trip of a lifetime.

Your leader will provide information on the places you are travelling through, offer suggestions for things to do and see, recommend great local eating venues and introduce you to our local friends. While not being guides in the traditional sense, you can expect them to have a broad general knowledge of the places visited on the trip, including historical, cultural, religious, and social aspects. At Intrepid we aim to support local guides who have specialised knowledge of the regions we visit. When not already included in your trip, your leader will be able to recommend a local guide service who can share more detailed or specialised information at specific sites should you be interested in delving deeper.

COVID-19 Health & Safety Measures
All Intrepid travellers 18 years and older and Intrepid leaders will be required to be fully vaccinated. Travellers must provide proof of vaccination to the leader at the group meeting on day 1 of the trip.
All children 5 and above must provide proof of vaccination, proof of recovery or a negative COVID-19 test.
Any high-risk customer who is unable to be vaccinated for medical reasons can apply for an exemption. Exemptions will be assessed on a case by case basis. Customers must provide a medical certificate from a medical professional.
