Take a step back in history as you navigate the traditional cobbled streets, gaze upon architectural wonders like the castle or palace, and have a sip in one of Portugal’s most exquisite squares.
Braga, once a Roman city and the capital of Galicia, was initially conquered by the Sueves before being taken over by Visigoths and Muslims. After a long period of Muslim rule, it wasn’t until mid-11th century that Bishop Pedro restored Christian domination to Braga. At this time, the bishops had already moved their seat of residence to Lugo in Spain. The Se Cathedral in Braga is one of the oldest in Portugal and has been an important religious symbol for centuries – hence why people have always proclaimed something is ‘older than the Se at Braga’ when describing something very ancient indeed. Equally as fascinating as Braga is Guimarães with its medieval and sixteenth century centre which has recently been awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status due to its links with founding of Portugal under D. Afonso Henriques. Guests will be staying overnight in Porto today.

Day 5 Discovery of Coimbra: Capital of Portugal during the Middle Ages
Start your day in Coimbra, one of Portugal’s most captivating cities. A local guide will be joining you to uncover the secrets of its past. This city has been a part of the Portuguese kingdom since 1131 when Dom Afonso Henriques incorporated it into their territory. Dom Pedro I and Dona Inês, characters that have inspired many writers, lived here in the 14th century. Unfortunately, their romance was not without consequence as King Dom Afonso IV feared his nation may slip into Castilian control and thus had Dona Inês executed. Nevertheless, this tale is now an integral part of Coimbra’s rich cultural history. Coimbra has been a site of knowledge and historical significance since the Middle Ages, when it was made the capital of Portugal. However, it underwent transformation during the Renaissance due to Dom João III (1521-57). He moved the University to Coimbra on a permanent basis as well as founded numerous colleges that offered alternate forms of education. Later in the 17th century, when the Jesuits began occupying the city, they built Sé Nova (New Cathedral), thus proclaiming their presence. Dom João V (1706-50) initiated a royal project which improved existing monuments, among them being those belonging to the University. Besides this, Dom José I (1750-77) implemented changes in certain aspects under his minister Marquês de Pombal, particularly with regards to education.

Day 6 Transfer service to Lisbon and Explore Tomar & Óbidos

Those making the en-route stop to Tomar and Obidos won’t be disappointed. Tomar is a charming little town situated in central Portugal, boasting an enchanting historical center as well as a stunning riverside park filled with swans, herons, and ducks. One of the most remarkable attractions located in Tomar is Convento de Cristo; this Unesco World Heritage site has been around for nearly 850 years and is an amalgamation of Gothic and Manueline styles. The Knights Templar held considerable influence in Portugal from the 12th to 16th centuries, supporting many exploratory expeditions during this period. Óbidos sits not far from the capital of Portugal and is considered one of the best preserved medieval towns in all of Europe. It was established on high ground near the Atlantic coast due to its strategic importance throughout history. It had already been settled before the Romans arrived on the Iberian Peninsula, and the town prospered after being chosen by the royal family. King Dinis offered it to his wife, Queen Isabel, in the 13th century. Being the favorite site of the Queen, she built an incredible number of churches in this small place.
