Tour Highlights
Day 1 LISBON > OBIDOS > ALCOBACA > NAZARE > FATIMA
Kicking off the journey this morning, you will be picked up from a central hotel or location in Lisbon. From there, your tour is headed to Obidos – an incredible blend of medieval walls, windmills and fruit trees. You’ll get to explore the unique architecture and taste its famous cherry liquor! The next destination is Alcobaca; home to the country’s first gothic church and burial site of Ines de Castro. After taking in the sights here, head to Nazare – a beautiful traditional fishing village with a seaside resort. Later that evening, make sure not to miss a stop at Batalha’s monastery and tomb of Henry the Navigator before finally settling down in Fatima for the night. Here you can attend a candle-lit procession before retiring at Hotel Sainte-Marie or similar accommodation.
Day 2 FATIMA > COIMBRA > AVEIRO > PORTO
On the third and fourth days, you will explore the stunning cities situated near Porto; Guimarães, Braga, Amarante and Vale do Douro. On the fifth morning, there is an exciting journey to Coimbra to visit one of the oldest universities in the world with its beautiful baroque library. There you can see St. Clara Church and Queen St. Isabel’s tomb as well. The afternoon brings a unique experience – a boat tour along Aveiro’s canals; often referred to as Portugal’s version of Venice! Finally, at nightfall you will rest in your accommodation in Porto – Hotel Vila Gale or similar- for some well-deserved sleep.
Day 3 PORTO > GUIMARAES > BRAGA > PORTO
On the third and fourth days in Porto, an expert guide will be leading you around some of Portugal’s most sought-after destinations. Beginning with a riverside living amphitheater dotted with ancient houses, palaces, and churches; followed by Minho – an illustrious region showcasing natural green sceneries and the famous ‘green wine’. Then finally, to Guimaraes – the birthplace of Portugal’s first king. Here you’ll have the opportunity to explore its historic center as well as its iconic Sacred Hill accompanied by the awe-inspiring Castle. You’ll also get to visit the Palace of Dukes of Bragança, which includes sections that are known to date back to the 15th century. Then drive to Braga known as the “Portuguese Rome” for its concentration of religious architecture, as the oldest Cathedral of the country, and the Bom Jesus do Monte Sanctuary with famous baroque stairways and gardens. After continuing to Barcelos, a historical city rich in popular handicraft where the Galo de Barcelos (the rooster of Barcelos) legend was born making the rooster a Portuguese icon. Day 4 PORTO
Take some time to get to know the wonderful city of Porto at your own leisure. Sit back and relax at your hotel or consider taking one of the optional tours available, such as the Hop-Off-Hop-On City bus. For a more immersive experience, you could opt for an evening of authentic Portuguese fado music! Accommodation for the duration of your stay will be provided by the Hotel Vila Galé, Porto or similar with breakfast included.
Day 5 PORTO > AMARANTE > VALE DO DOURO > URGEIRICA
Following a hearty breakfast, we head to the remarkable town of Amarante. Noted for its celebration of love and marriage, as well as its vibrant market, it’s an ideal place to start the day. Driving onward to Vila Real, visitors are treated to a look at the magnificent gardens of the Mateus manor estate. Passing through vineyards and witnessing remarkable scenery along our journey, we stop by Lamego where stands N.S Remedios and many local treats awaits. We then travel on into mountains of Viseu city nestled beneath a majestic cathedral within a bustling commercial area before arriving at Hotel Urgeirica situated at Urgeirica. Day 6 URGEIRICA > BUSSACO > TOMAR > LISBON
Following a delicious breakfast, the tour carries on to Bussaco and its collection of strange trees. Afterwards the group moves onward to Tomar whose history is entwined with the Order of the Templars. It was Dom Gualdim Pais, the primary Grand Master of this order in Portugal who initiated construction of both the castle and its illustrious Convent of Christ. Through time, numerous revisions have been carried out; however, it remains as an emblematic part of this city and holds a World Heritage classification by UNESCO. The overnight journey back to Lisbon then ensues with meals included on board. Accommodation for that night will be at Olissippo Marquês de Sá – Lisbon or similar establishments.
Day 7 LISBON > SINTRA > CASCAIS > ESTORIL > LISBON
Following breakfast, head out to the regal Sintra. There, explore the picturesque town and investigate the palace before drinking in the spectacular views from Cabo da Roca – Europe’s westernmost point. As we journey along the coast, make sure to take in one of Portugal’s premier surfing spots, Hell’s Mouth; marvel at cosmopolitan Cascais and admire the gardens of Estoril Casino. Stay for the night in Lisbon for a memorable experience with all meals included.
Day 8 LISBON > EVORA
In the morning, you’ll leave Lisbon for an invigorating journey to Evora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are numerous grand monuments to be discovered here including the Roman Temple, the Romanesque-Gothic Cathedral, Saint Francis Church with its notorious ‘Bones Chapel’, and of course, the University. Shopping in the market is a great way to spend some time while having lunch before free time is yours to explore In the afternoon. Day 9 EVORA > BEJA > SILVES > LAGOS
Following breakfast, take the morning to explore Evora before heading off to Beja where you will view Portugal’s maximum medieval tower. This picturesque town has white houses and a long-established castle from the thirteenth century. Then, proceed on your journey to Silves with its majestic red sandstone castles which strike an impressive presence. You will conclude today at Lagos that lies along an incredible coastline of golden shores, craggy cliffs and sparkling waters. There are several historical monuments to investigate here, delicious local cuisine and a vibrant nightlife. Enjoy your stay overnight at the Hotel Vila Galé Lagos or similar. Meals: B
Day 10 LAGOS > PONTA DA PIEDADE > SAGRES > CABO DE SAO VICENTE
Start the day with a trip to Ponta de Piedad, where beautiful vistas of the Atlantic await. Then venture onward to Sagres, an old fishing port and home to a legendary fortress that was once used as a navigation training center. Back at the hotel in Lagos, you’ll have plenty of time for some independent exploration or simply lounge on the breathtaking beach, taking in the warmth of the sea. Overnight will be spent in Lagos. Day 11 LAGOS > SETUBAL > SERRA DA ARRABIDA > LISBON
Once your morning meal is complete, it’s time to take the journey back to Lisbon. On the way, you’ll have a stop at Setubal – an important harbour and industrial center. Then it’s on into the mountains of Arrabida – a National Park maintained by Portugal.
