Day 1 ARRIVAL PORTO / CAR PICK-UP
Once you land at Porto International Airport, our local representative will be there to welcome you and take care of your car hire requirements. They will also provide all the necessary information for your departure day. When you reach your hotel, you can spend the rest of the day as you wish – whether it’s relaxing or exploring this beautiful UNESCO World Heritage city. Get lost in its stunning old streets, admire impressive buildings and monuments, taste some delicious local dishes and just soak up the atmosphere of Porto. In the evening enjoy a comfortable overnight stay in Porto!
Day 2 PORTO
Start your day with a delightful breakfast at the hotel and then begin your exploration of the captivating city of Porto. Roam around its marvellous neighbourhoods and don’t miss out on seeing the ornate San Francisco Church, representing an outstanding example of baroque art in northern Portugal. Additionally, cast a peek at the Stock Exchange Palace, well-known for its Moorish Hall, followed by a visit to one of the remarkable Port Wine Cellars where you can savour an unforgettable wine tasting experience. Take some time to wander around the city centre and shopping enthusiasts should make sure to stroll through Santa Catarina pedestrian area – the idyllic setting for walking as well as purchasing. Spend overnight in Porto.
Day 3 PORTO – GUIMARAES – BRAGA – VIANA DO CASTELO (144km – 2hrs)
Begin your journey of discovery in the birthplace of Portugal, Guimaraes. Wander through its medieval streets and view the legendary Sacred Hill, crowned by the Castle, as well as the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança, from centuries past. Then journey to Braga known as “Portuguese Rome” for its concentration of grand religious structures such as the oldest cathedral in portugal and Bom Jesus do Monte Sanctuary with its remarkable baroque stairway and gardens. After marveling at these sites, make your way to Viana do Castelo and check into your hotel for an overnight stay.
Day 4 VIANA DO CASTELO – VIGO – PONTEVEDRA – SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA/SPAIN (194km – 2.5hr)
After you have had your breakfast at the hotel start your journey to Viana do Castelo, a city that captures both Portuguese Discoveries and cod fishing industry. The local gold filigree works are especially renowned around this area. Drive further to Vigo, the largest city of Galicia which is based on its estuary. It’s primarily a fishing port and holds the title as Europe’s finest. Next comes Pontevedra -the capital of Galicia – it has been named by the United Nations as one of Europe’s best cities to inhabit due to its numerous pedestrian streets and green spaces per person. The final destination will be Santiago de Compostela- check into your hotel here for an overnight stay.
Day 5 SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA
The morning sun rises on Santiago de Compostela, a city that has held world heritage status since 1985. As visitors and pilgrims from all around the globe flock to experience its unique offerings, begin your day with breakfast at the hotel before strolling through the centre. Take in sights like Plaza del Obradoiro, as well as its Cathedral consecrated to Saint James. Right in front of this revered structure lies the conclusion of the renowned Camino de Santiago trail.
Day 6 SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA – OURENSE – TELOES (300km – 3hrs)
Start your day off right with a delicious breakfast at the hotel, then it’s time to explore Ourense – the lovey city of water. Why not take advantage of one of the many thermal springs for free – such as A Chavasqueira? While you’re there, be sure to check out Fonte d’Burgas which is one of the city’s most iconic sights. The cool 65 degree waters are sure to leave you feeling refreshed. Afterwards, make your way over to Teloes and settle into your hotel for an overnight stay!
Day 7 TELOES – PESO DA RÉGUA – LAMEGO – S. PEDRO DO SUL – VISEU (170km – 2hrs)
Start your day with a delicious breakfast at the hotel before embarking on a journey to Vila Real. The first stop will be the Solar de Mateus, whose iconic façade can be spotted on Portuguese rosé wine bottles. Afterwards, venture into the Douro Valley, part of Portugal’s demarcated port region surrounded by beautiful vineyards and stunning landscapes. Make Peso da Régua, an area in Vila Real situated near the Douro River and known as the Capital of the Demarcated Wine Region, your base camp. Lastly, don’t forget to pay Lamego a visit! Here awaits one of Portugal’s most revered shrines: Nossa Senhora dos Remédios with its grandiose baroque style staircase. Stop in to experience some of Lamego’s specialities, such as its renowned ham and the delightful “Bola de Lamego” which is baked with smoked ham. Next, take a journey to São Pedro do Sul – world-famous for its thermal baths that date back thousands of years prior to the Romans. What makes this destination so famous is that natural mineral water emerges at a temperature of 68 degrees C from two spas – Rainha D. Amélia and D. Afonso Henriques – making them accessible all year round. Finally, head over to Viseu where you can stay overnight in one of its many hotels.
Day 8 VISEU – LUSO – BUSSACO – COIMBRA (94km – 1hr)
Following a hearty breakfast at the hotel, visitors can begin their exploration of Viseu which is renowned for its vineyards and was once home to Portugal’s oldest hero, Viriato. Drive westward to Luso, a celebrated spa town nestled at the base of Bussaco forest. Well-known for its restorative mineral water, countless bottles of “Água do Luso” are consumed every day. Take a scenic drive through this beautiful part of Portugal before making your way to Bussaco – an area possessed by abundant vegetation where you’ll find an exquisite and romantic hotel that used to serve as the royal hunting lodge. Finally, make your way to Coimbra for check in and overnight stay.
Day 9 COIMBRA – FIGUEIRA DA FOZ – BATALHA – FÁTIMA (146km – 2hrs)
Begin your journey at the hotel with a hearty breakfast. Then make your way to Coimbra, home of one of the oldest universities on earth. Inside its walls lies an awe-inspiring baroque library and a unique atmosphere filled with ancient customs such as black student capes and the haunting Fado music. Your next stop is St. Clara Church, where you can find Queen Santa Isabel’s tomb – she was famous for her miraculous roses. Afterwards, drive to Figueira da Foz located near the center of Portugal; it has 34 kilometers of stunning coastal beaches to explore! Finally, arrive at Batalha where you can marvel at the Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória – an impressive masterpiece of gothic architecture with Henry the Navigator’s tomb inside too! To end your day, check-into your hotel situated nearby Fatima for an overnight stay.
Day 10 FÁTIMA – ÓBIDOS – SINTRA – LISBON (207km – 3hrs)
Head out to Fatima following breakfast at the hotel—the most revered Catholic shrine in the world dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Its fame is attributed to the three shepherd children’s sighting of Our Lady of the Rosary. Taking a scenic route through windmills and orchards, your next stop will be Óbidos, encircled by antique walls boasting diverse architecture. Don’t forget to sample ginginha (bitter cherry liqueur)! Lastly, make your way to Sintra—a mysterious place bound by time with grand palaces and castles veiled beneath a characteristic fog that often catches travelers off guard. Take some time to explore the stunning area in and around the National Palace of Sintra. This was an important residence for Portuguese royalty during the 15th and 16th centuries, where they would pass their summer months. When you are ready, take a drive to Lisbon and check into your hotel for a comfortable night’s rest.
Day 11 LISBON
Start your morning off right in the heart of downtown Lisbon – Baixa. Here you can see how Marquis of Pombal rebuilt the area after the devastating 18th-century earthquake. To further explore Portugal’s history, journey to Alfama, which dates back to when Arabs first founded it centuries ago. Then take a trip to Belem; here you can enjoy numerous parks and gardens as well as its iconic Belem Tower – a symbol of Berlin throughout time. You must also admire Jeronimos Monastery – an icon representing the Age of Discovery that has been awarded World Cultural Heritage status by UNESCO. Wrap up your day with a restful night’s sleep back in Lisbon.
Day 12 DEPARTURE LISBON / CAR DROP-OFF
Before heading back home, why not make the most of your last morning in Lisbon? After taking in the city sights and sounds, it’s time to drive off to Lisbon Airport and drop off the rental car.
