If you are looking for respite from the unforgiving sun in the hottest summer months, head for Sintra. It’s cooler hilly terrain surrounded by lush forest make it a haven of shady spots to hide from the midday sun. With the plethora of beautiful palaces and gardens to visit, each so ornate and with a story to tell about its builder, it makes a fascinating retreat.

However, if its surf and sun you are after, Sintra has some of the best deserted surf and seafood beaches on the coast. Try Praia da Adraga, its unspoilt nature, quiet expansive beach and dramatic cliffs make it really worth a visit. Don’t be fooled though, the sea is wild, strong currents and cold water, ideal for surfing but not for swimming unless you are a fish!
